So I worked at chipotle for about 3 weeks. My interview went very well...I met with the manager and then he wanted me to meet another manager and then she wanted me to meet another crew member and eventually I met everyone on the morning shift and they hired me on the spot. My orientation and training was going okay...until the GM sat down with me and wanted to teach me about "chipotle culture". And holy shit the chipotle culture is when I realized that I had just joined a cult. They kept using fancy language like top performers and empowerment and other bullshit and i was just like what? whats the point of all this fluff? literally none of their mission statement was about the customers...it was all about empowering each other and making each other better. at first the whole "make each other better" thing seemed pretty cool....if you see an employee slacking off/ doing something incorrectly/ not giving 100% then you "elevate" them...that makes them better which also makes you better. My GM kept track of all of these "elevations" each time you elevated someone you got a tally mark on the board in the office....which was to show your impact on improving the store. Sounds great, but it was absolute hell. this meant that every time somebody had room to say something they did and made a scene about it. When I first started it felt like everyone had to put in their two cents with everything that I did and constantly picking apart everything that I did. For example when I made salsa for the first time I was going step by step in the recipe book and doing everything as I should and people would still hover over me and be like "make sure you use this spoon and not this one" or "pay extra attention to how to label it" and then they would go tell the GM that they elevated me for a tally mark. The whole time i was making salsa I was just like yeah okay I know i have the recipe right here or i'd say okay I'm not at that part yet.. fast forward to a couple days working there and I was working tortilla. the customer said they were strictly vegan and asked me to change my gloves...so I changed my gloves and started walking it down the line and the customer was very pleased. finally i was about to wrap the burrito and the manager comes over and tells me to stop for a moment so he could "elevate me". he told me I needed to stay in my positions and not come over to the salsa's and that I shouldn't have given them so much fajitas (which they asked for btw)..I told him that the customer had an allergy and then i went back to rolling the burrito. the manager stopped me again and was like "oh okay great but just so you know..." and went on to explain why i need to stay on my side and how it helps the line flow and nthe customers have a better experience and other bullshit. in my head i was just like I FUCKING KNOW ALL OF THIS JUST LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE AND LET ME ROLL THIS GODDAMN BURRITO SO I CAN GO HELP THE NEXT CUSTOMER. he finally left me alone and by the time i rolled the woman's burrito she had already paid and got her drink and the next customer was unbelievably pissed that they had to wait. This was a reoccurring thing... each time they were "elevating" me I had to stop everything I was doing so I could listen, no matter how stupid it was. even things such as when i dropped some corn into the sour cream on accident or i forgot to say double meat etc...they could have elevated me by just saying "be more careful" or "remember to say double steak" but instead they had to stop me from helping the customers in order to have a 10-30s discussion about what I did wrong and why we should do things a certain way. it's unbelievably frustrating. And then thanks to the damn tally points, my coworkers would find anything and everything they could to elevate me on for their own benefit. Now my boyfriend and I make jokes like "can I elevate you for a second?" and we both crack up laughing...but for real that was the absolute most obnoxious thing about working at chipotle. More to come, but that requires another post.
