As of today I am a former employee, even though it's only been a week since I started. My store was in Southern California in a town where you go to pee and eat before a 200 mile drive to Vegas. My experience started a month before I got hired. Got a interview, one of 3. Pretty excited, but the interview was weird since the GM and I went outside and she was basically talking about how great CMG was and how anal they are about things. Interview seemed easy. Then she took me to the back to show me everything (looking back I should have slipped in the kitchen and sued) which I thought was weird. Got asked to a second interview a week later by getting an acceptance e-mail you get when they want to interview you the 1st time. Waited 20 minutes just for a 5 minute interview! Said they'd call me back within a week. I got no call so I called them back. They said to wait another week. Long story short, I got a call back almost a month later. Just another easy 5 minute interview. Now for the fun part... Called in the morning and told I got the job, so I was pretty happy. I went the to the store and the SM did the usual 2 forms of ID and uniform bit, but parts I should have done at home she did it at the store. That seemed weird since she asked me stuff like my race and social. Anyway, my first day was the beginning of the crappy week. I got put on prep where I had to cut veggies. Worker showed me how to cut onions and jalapenos in 1/4 inch pieces. Every single thing I cut was wrong! I was thinking I'd get it eventually with practice, but I was expected to learn everything the next day with time limits! 18 minutes or something for each veggies, getting yelled at for not having the right cuts, and had to make guacamole in 32 minutes. A whole box of avocado in 32 minutes? Thats insane! I barely managed 45 minutes. Not to mention the washing of dishes ruined my right hand as I type. All the employees, nice and all, were totally convinced that they were being challenged or empowered, when I could see it was just brainwashing and an excuse for working at sweat-shop like speed. The level of stress everyone projected was obvious; every human-mistake was full-out crisis to anyone who cared, and those who made those mistakes freak or said things like "shes going to be pissed" or something. The store always seemed busy and the line barely moved, but I noticed that the reason it looked so busy was because the design of the store is basically one huge line to make it look busy, a the usage of space is ridiculous - there's crap everywhere. At other restaurants they can have lines twice as big and they get through twice as fast. Great cutting edge design, eh? So my last day, I had to make 5 guacamole in 138 minutes (And in between that I had to clean the floor for an hour). I obviously couldn't reach such speed, so GM was basically on me about that. On my 4th guacamole I was going to mash it, and in a fit of rage from constant criticism and frustration I mashed the GWAUK with such force I could have smashed Steve Ells head in. GM walked in the middle of my mash rage and basically asked me to resign. I was hugely relieved I didn't have to quit.
