I had worked for Chipotle for six years as a manager! When I first began in 2004, before the company went public, it was a different, fun place to work! It was because that I loved my job (at the time), that I did not mind working 15 hour days, because I would open my store, and then be called, asking if I could go close another, because they had no managers! When I said I worked seven days a week, I WORKED seven days a week, but I didn't mind, it WAS a fun place to be!
Now...2006 comes along, the company goes public, and things go to crap! Managers went from working 8 hour shifts, to 9 hours, then 10 hours, which made a lot of people mad! New higher-ups would come in, and want to change everything around, even though there was nothing wrong with how it was to begin with! They started this Restauranter promotion, where they expected EVERY corner, crack, ceiling, tile to be be shiny new, but they cut crew hours more than half, and there was NEVER time to do these things, because I was working at high volume stores!
When I had first started, I would be told that managers were NOT to help the crew with their work, that we were suppose to manage them (I always helped anyway, so we could have longer breaks before we opened at 11am). All of a sudden, ALL the managers should be on a station, while watching the entire store, while doing weekly video audits, while doing office work! I was now being yelled at because my DM would walk in, and yell that I shouldn't be on any station, but when he came in, and I wasn't on a station, I would then be told that I should be helping my crew every moment!
It had come to the point where I would have to take my work home with me, after working 15 hours! Either I was doing schedules, so they would be put out on time, or I was doing my weekly video audit from home! When I would bring this up to my DM, he would only tell me that since I was a salary manager, I was always on the clock....umm...even at home????
We were told that the opening crew had to be done BEFORE 10:30am, so that we could open at 11am, but the doors had to be opened at 10:45, which we always got a LOT of customers! What happened to the mandatory 30 minute break? I would just be told that since Chipotle pays the crew for their breaks, we can have them come back at any time, even if it's only been 30 seconds into their break!
The Development Journals, which when they first started, were a great idea, became a total joke! I always took them very seriousily with my crew, but then my DM wanted them to be used a form of write ups, so that we could fire people! That's not what they are used for, I would say!
The company came out with English Toolbox, I was also expected to be a English teacher, and teach the people who did not speak the language English! They told me that all the managers in my store were to do this, even though they too could not speak proper English themselves! There was a card in the front that said that this was not a mandatory thing to do, but my DM would say if I wanted to keep my job, then it was!
The audit visit was ALWAYS a pain! They had a person come out, and check EVERY receipt, coupon, servings to the customers, even how we washed our hands and dishes! Every week, I had to stand there with the audit book, and make sure everybody was washing their hands every hour, and that the dish sinks were always clean, and the dishes had no spots!!! If you were seen on video giving what the audit person THOUGHT was too much food, even if the customer asked for a little more, you were written up, even though Chipotle says to give the customer a little more if they ask, and not to charge extra!
I dreaded the six month review/raises for the crew! When I first started, Chipotle was VERY generous with raises! Now...even if your entire review is a Above Expectations, you would only get a 2 cent raise, or even nothing at all! When I asked how somebody who was so great would not be getting any kind of raise, I would then be told that that make $9.00 an hour, which was good enough, or they're really not that great...HUH???? I always lost a lot people around review time because of this!
I was always TOLD, never asked, that I needed to go help another GM with their store get cleaned and organized, because they were up for the Restauranter promotion. Umm...shouldn't their store ALWAYS be clean and organized at all times? When I asked about my promotion, I would be told that I wasn't ready, but I can go help others get their promotion???
I finally quit in March of 2010, and that was only because they were trying to get me fired! I was presented with a four page write up from things that supposedly happend two months before, which was all news to me! I was also informed I had a bunch of complaints sent to HR about me from crew and other managers, which was the first I heard of any! When I asked why I was never informed of any of these things, my DM just looked at me, and said, you're being told now!
That was the last straw...I looked him straight in the eyes, and said, I quit...and I'm telling you now! Gave him all my keys...and walked out!
That was the best feeling I have ever had! It was six years of stress being lifted right off me, and I NEVER regretted it!!!!
